Mastering the magical arts in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim requires players to complete specialized trials once their skill levels peak. Among these legendary challenges is the Destruction Ritual Spell quest, which rewards mages with devastating area-of-effect spells. Understanding the quest requirements and altar locations is essential for any wizard aiming to harness the true potential of elemental magic.
Starting the Power of the Elements Quest
To initiate this questline, you must raise your Destruction magic skill level to at least 90, though reaching level 100 ensures dialogue triggers reliably. Head to the College of Winterhold and speak with Faralda to inquire about learning more advanced destruction techniques. She will hand you a mysterious book titled Power of the Elements, which contains cryptic riddles pointing toward hidden pedestals scattered across Skyrim.
Unlike standard quests, this task does not provide active objective markers on your world map. You must interpret the riddles provided inside the book to track down ancient altars. Preparing elemental spells for fire, frost, and shock beforehand will save you time as you travel between these remote sites.
Finding the First Pedestal at Windward Ruins
Your journey begins by heading west of Dawnstar to locate the Windward Ruins. Nestled in the snowy landscape, these ancient stone arches house a central pedestal. Place the book upon the pedestal and cast a fire-damage spell, such as Fireball or Incinerate, directly onto it.
Once the spell strikes the altar, an explosion will occur and update the text inside the book. Be sure to pick the book back up before departing for the next landmark. Reading the newly unlocked page reveals directions to a mountain outpost.
Locating North Skybound Watch and Four Skull Lookout
The second altar is located at North Skybound Watch, situated in the mountains southeast of Riverwood. Clear out any hostile bandits inhabiting the ruin before placing the book on the pedestal. Hit the altar with a frost-damage spell, like Ice Spear, to reveal the final riddle and retrieve your tome.
For the final step, travel far to the west to find Four Skull Lookout, located east of Markarth. Place the book on the altar one last time and strike it with a shock spell like Lightning Bolt or Sparks. After the final magical surge, pick up the book and read it directly from your inventory to instantly learn the Firestorm spell.
Unlocking Master Level Destruction Spells
Completing this quest automatically grants you the Firestorm spell, which unleashing massive fire damage to surrounding enemies. Returning to Faralda at the College of Winterhold unlocks additional master-level Destruction spell tomes for purchase. You can now buy the devastating Blizzard and Lightning Storm spells to complete your high-tier spellbook.
